Gastric balloons

Gastric Balloon Spatz

Spatz gastric balloon has some advantage of a classic gastric balloon. It is introduced for up to 12 months; on the contrary, the classic gastric balloon has to be removed after 6 months. Another advantage is the ability to adjust the fluid in the balloon during these 12 months. This results in even greater weight reduction. Spatz3 is only adjustable gastric balloon.

FAQ about the gastric balloon Spatz3

Is the gastric ballon Spatz3 right for me?

The Spatz3 is suggested to patients with obesity (BMI/body mass index over 30,0). This non-surgical weight loss procedure is a prevention or treatment of the diseases caused by obesity and helps improve the patient’s quality of life and potentially prolongs it.

If you decide to lose weight with the Spatz3 balloon, you need no reference from your practitioner. The complete check-up is done at our clinic.

We have created an anamnestic questionnaire, which is helpful to find out, if the gastric balloon is suitable.

Once you have filled the form out, please send it via e-mail to: nosek@iscare.cz.

Your form will be evaluated free of charge.

Frequent contraindications with the gastric balloon Spatz3
  • Antidepressants or other psychopharmacs, depression and depressive disorders, mental health problems up to self-harm

  • BMI lower than 30.0

  • Defects of stomach lining (preventive intake of PPI before the procedure recommended, please contact us for further information)

  • Pregnancy

How is the gastric balloon Spatz3 applied and removed?

The procedure itself takes only about 15-20 minutes. Before the insertion an endoscopic examination of the throat, stomach and duodenum is performed. Once the findings are checked, the balloon is inserted during the gastroscopy and filled with 500ml of physiologic liquid.

The check-up and endoscopic procedure is performed in one day. The patient is able to leave the clinic next morning after the insertion.

One of the many advantages of the gastric balloon is the use of a short analgosedation (using sedative and analgesic medication). There is no need of general anaesthesia and intubation so the procedure is significantly less intervening than a bariatric surgery.

12 months after insertion the Spatz3 has to be removed. By using special tools, a small hole is made in the balloon, liquid is completely sucked out so the balloon can be extracted. You can leave the clinic about 2 hours after the removal (you do not have to stay overnight).

How much weight will I loose with the gastric balloon Spatz3?

This weight loss method is very effective. Ultimate weight loss depends, as with all bariatric methods, on the patient weight before the procedure, and subsequent adherence to postoperative recommendations.

The Spatz3 is the only adjustable gastric balloon in the world.

The balloon flows freely in the stomach. It evokes a feeling of fullness, reduces 1/3-1/2 of the stomach capacity and thereby reduces food intake. Thanks to this mechanism, the patient loses weight. The Spatz3 balloon can be placed for up to one year. During this period the patient becomes accustomed to a new healthy diet and continues in it after the balloon is removed.

With the Spatz3 patients lose in average 25 kg. We have had also patients who achieved a great weight loss of 50 kg in one year.

What are the potential side effects of the gastric balloon Spatz3?

Generally the gastric balloon as a reversible, non-surgical weight loss procedure is a safe and reliable procedure for a wide range of obese adults. Compared to weight loss surgery, the gastric balloon has a significantly lower complication rate.

Since the body has to get used to the changes, gastric issues such as stomach discomfort, heartburn, nausea, vomiting and pain can occur right after the insertion and last usually the first 3 to 5 days. These symptoms can usually be managed with oral medication at home. You will be discharged with medication to settle nausea and pain.

Based on the side effects mentioned above, our patients stay at the clinic overnight so we can ensure fluid intake and provide them with medication through infusion therapy. This is crucial to minimalize complication rate and prepare the patient for a safe return home.

How will my diet change after procedure?

Right after the procedure you will be provided with a dietary plan. You should start with liquid diet for the next 7 days after insertion followed by pureed food before you continue with normal food.

Do not drink too much at once. It’s better to eat and drink more small portions than less and bigger ones.

It is highly recommended to cooperate with a dietitian to achieve the best results.
