How is the gastric balloon Orbera applied and removed?

The procedure itself takes only about 15-20 minutes. Before the insertion an endoscopic examination of the throat, stomach and duodenum is performed. Once the findings are checked, the balloon is inserted during the gastroscopy and filled with 500ml of physiologic liquid.

The check-up and endoscopic procedure is performed in one day. The patient is able to leave the clinic next morning after the insertion.

One of the many advantages of the gastric balloon is the use of a short analgosedation (using sedative and analgesic medication). There is no need of general anaesthesia and intubation so the procedure is significantly less intervening than a bariatric surgery.

6 or 12 months after insertion of the Orbera gastric balloon has to be removed. By using special tools, a small hole is made in the balloon, liquid is completely sucked out so the balloon can be extracted. You can leave the clinic about 2 hours after the removal (you do not have to stay overnight).

How much weight will I loose with the gastric balloon Orbera?

This weight loss method is very effective. Ultimate weight loss depends, as with all bariatric methods, on the patient weight before the procedure, and subsequent adherence to aftercare recommendations.

The balloon flows freely in the stomach. It evokes a feeling of fullness, reduces 1/3 to 1/2 of the stomach capacity and thereby reduces food intake. Thanks to this mechanism, the patient loses weight. The intragastric balloon can be placed for up to 6 months. During this period the patient becomes accustomed to a new healthy diet and continues in it after the balloon is removed.

With the classic gastric balloon for 6 months patients lose in average 17 kg.

Patients with the 12 months balloons (Orbera365) achieve in average weight loss of 25 kg.

What are the potential side effects of the gastric balloon Orbera?

Generally the gastric balloon as a reversible, non-surgical weight loss procedure is a safe and reliable procedure for a wide range of obese adults. Compared to weight loss surgery, the gastric balloon has a significantly lower complication rate.

Since the body has to get used to the changes, gastric issues such as stomach discomfort, heartburn, nausea, vomiting and pain can occur right after the insertion and last usually the first 3 to 5 days. These symptoms can usually be managed with oral medication at home. You will be discharged with medication to settle nausea and pain.

Based on the side effects mentioned above, our patients stay at the clinic overnight so we can ensure fluid intake and provide them with medication through infusion therapy. This is crucial to minimalize complication rate and prepare the patient for a safe return home.

Frequent contraindications with the gastric balloon Orbera/Orbera365
  • Serious mental health problems
  • BMI lower than 30,0
  • Defects of stomach lining (preventive intake of PPI before the procedure recommended, please contact us for further information)
  • Pregnancy
How will my diet change after procedure?

Right after the procedure you will be provided with a dietary plan. You should start with liquid diet for the next 7 days after insertion followed by pureed food before you continue with normal food.

Do not drink too much at once. It’s better to eat and drink more small portions than less and bigger ones.

It is highly recommended to cooperate with a dietitian to achieve the best results.
